NCHR, Egyptian Trade Union Federation sign MoU

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote the economic, social, and political rights of citizens—and specifically to support the participation of workers in public life in line with the principles of social justice, equality, and non-discrimination—the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Egyptian Trade Union Federation in April 2025. This initiative seeks to strengthen the culture of human rights within the workplace and to provide workers with the necessary legal and knowledge-based tools to enable their effective engagement in public affairs.

This partnership is launched within the broader national preparations for the upcoming local council elections, scheduled to take place following the enactment of the governing legislation. The initiative aligns with Article 180 of the Egyptian Constitution, which guarantees that workers and farmers shall hold no less than 50% of the total seats in local councils, while ensuring diversity and inclusive representation of all societal groups.

In this context, the NCHR underscores the importance of enabling more than 25 million workers in Egypt to participate meaningfully in the upcoming electoral process. The Council highlights the need for awareness-raising initiatives on political rights, nomination procedures, and voting mechanisms, in order to strengthen the role of local councils in overseeing development plans, monitoring local governance, and exercising accountability tools as stipulated by law.

Ambassador Khattab emphasized that this agreement reflects a genuine national will to uphold the dignity of all Egyptians, particularly that of Egyptian workers who form the backbone of the nation’s development and social justice efforts. She noted that the MoU opens new avenues for institutional collaboration, with the Council committing its full expertise and resources to the success of this partnership, recognizing that the advancement of workers’ rights is integral to national progress and societal cohesion.
