NCHR Holds Workshop on Human Rights and the Protection of Journalists in Partnership with the UN

The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) launched a two-day workshop entitled "A Human Rights-Based Approach to the Protection and Safety of Journalists", organized in partnership with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) under the auspices of the European Union. The workshop brings together 22 journalists and media professionals representing a wide range of newspapers and media outlets.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Mohamed Alnsour, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Section at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Mr. Ezzat Ibrahim, NCHR board member and Chairperson of the Media Committee. The session was also attended by NCHR board member Ms. Yara Kassem.

The workshop aims to strengthen journalists' and media professionals' understanding of a human rights-based approach to media reporting by enhancing their knowledge of international human rights standards related to freedom of opinion and expression, the safety of journalists, and the role of the media in promoting and protecting human rights as well as fostering public participation.

The programme also addresses a number of key issues, including the international framework for the protection of freedom of expression, States' obligations concerning the safety of journalists, best practices in human rights-based reporting, and the challenges faced by journalists in carrying out their professional duties.

The workshop forms part of the ongoing partnership between NCHR and OHCHR, reflecting their joint commitment to strengthening the capacities of media professionals and promoting a safe and enabling environment for journalists, in line with international human rights standards.
