Ambassador Moushira Khattab, President of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), said that the International Solidarity and Sustainable Development Plan conference takes place at a key timing, noting that it represents a paradigm leap in human rights action in the Arab region. She pointed out that the importance of the conference is based on the value of human development and the importance of respecting human rights.
That was part of her speech during the international conference organised by NCHR, in collaboration with the Arab Network for Human Rights National Institutions (ANNHRI), the National Human Rights Commission in Qatar, the Arab League, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on international solidarity and Sustainable Development Plan (Goal-16), which witnessed wide participation of ministers, local, regional and international active figures in human rights.
She added that this conference aims to promote human rights, as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human rights, which represents the cornerstone of the UN human rights protection system.
The NCHR President added that thanks to international solidarity the universal declaration was translated into two important covenants representing legal responsibilities that Arab countries have chosen to commit to, pledging to take a range of general measures to reinforce these rights, including the establishment of national human rights institutions (NHRIs).
"We all know that the universal human rights movement is based on the sovereignty of member states, which was clearly manifested during the Vienna conference which was convened upon the request of the late Dr. Boutros Boutros Ghali, the founder and first President of the NCHR in Egypt", she added.
