NCHR Receives Delegation from the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate to Discuss Press Freedom and Media Issues

Dr. Ahmed Ihab Gamaleldin, President of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), received a delegation from the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, headed by Mr. Khaled El-Balshy, President of the Syndicate. The meeting was held as part of ongoing consultations and exchanges of views on a number of issues related to freedom of the press and media.

The meeting followed recent consultations between the NCHR and the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, which addressed several issues of mutual interest, foremost among them the status of websites seeking to regularize their situation and ways to coordinate efforts among the relevant institutions to address this matter.

The delegation was also received by Mr. Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat, Vice-President of NCHR, alongside several NCHR Board Members.

Discussions covered a number of issues related to freedom of the press and media, particularly the situation of websites seeking to regularize their status and the associated challenges, which require consultation and coordination among the relevant institutions.

NCHR heard the Syndicate’s perspective on this matter, and both sides exchanged views on possible approaches to addressing it. They emphasized the importance of joint efforts to reach practical solutions that take into account the applicable legal framework and support freedom of the press and media.

Both sides also stressed the importance of coordinating efforts to foster an enabling environment that strengthens guarantees for freedom of opinion and expression, including freedom of the press, promotes professional practices, and encourages dialogue and cooperation among relevant institutions, thereby contributing to the protection of rights and freedoms and reinforcing the role of the press and media in society.
