The world celebrates International Human Rights Day on December 10 of each year, which commemorates the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.
This day serves as a reminder of the necessity of protecting and promoting human rights at all levels, as the provisions of the Declaration include thirty rights, most notably dignity and the right to life.
It is also a day that Egypt celebrates for its participation in drafting this Universal Declaration as one of the member states of the international community, which has always been concerned with issues of human rights, their development and application. Egypt has linked this to the establishment of a constitution for the country that is consistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) praises what Egypt has achieved during the past period in terms of developing and strengthening the human rights protection system despite the many challenges it faces. NCHR stresses that there is still a need to make more efforts and build on what has been achieved to spread a culture of human rights, as one of the means that will enhance democracy, justice and equality.
The anniversary of this day coincides with the date of one of the constitutional entitlements of Egyptians inside the country, which is the presidential elections, which express the exercise of the right to participate in public affairs, and the promotion of civil and political rights, and one of the rights stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
As this anniversary coincides with what the world is witnessing of crimes against humanity, forced displacement, and genocide against Palestinian citizens in Gaza, NCHR renews its call to all United Nations organizations to carry out their responsibilities towards protecting human rights in Gaza and all Palestinian regions, considering that security and stability are the basis for protecting human rights.
