The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), led by Ambassador Moushira Khattab, participated in a session hosted by the Human Rights Committee in the House of Representatives, chaired by MP Tarek Radwan. The session focused on the Accessibility Code, aiming to guarantee the rights of people with disabilities.
Representatives from the Ministries of Local Development, Housing and Urban Communities, Transportation, and the Cairo Metro Authority joined the discussion alongside Dr. Iman Karim, General Supervisor of the National Council for People with Disabilities.
The session addressed the implementation measures undertaken by relevant ministries to ensure adherence to the Accessibility Code. However, a consensus emerged among attendees regarding the unsatisfactory level of commitment to implementing the code, particularly Article 30 of Law No. 10 of 2018 on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
NCHR President Khattab emphasized the need for a comprehensive work plan that:
● Coordinates government efforts.
● Secures necessary financial resources.
● Evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of allocated funds.
● Fosters collaboration with civil society organizations.
● Provides training for relevant personnel on the human rights of persons with disabilities.
● Establishes robust monitoring mechanisms to identify and address obstacles.
● Oversees implementation and assesses performance.
● Leverages successful experiences through incorporating the perspectives of persons with disabilities and involving them in decision-making processes.
Khattab further highlighted the NCHR's collaborative efforts with the Central Bank and various banks to empower persons with disabilities through financial inclusion programs. She underlined the significance of economic empowerment in facilitating their progress and integration into society.
The NCHR President commended the sustained commitment demonstrated by the Human Rights Committee, led by MP Tarek Radwan, in convening a series of meetings with diverse stakeholders to advance human rights protection.
