Dr. Ahmed Ihab Gamal El-Din, President of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), and Mr. Ihab El-Tammawi, NCHR Member and Head of its Legislative Committee, participated in a meeting of the Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives convened to consider a draft law amending the legislation governing the National Council for Human Rights. The draft was submitted by MP Tarek Radwan, Chairman of the Committee, together with one tenth of the members of the House of Representatives.
During the meeting, the President of the National Council for Human Rights welcomed the initiative undertaken by the Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives to strengthen the legislative framework governing the NCHR's mandate and work. Dr. Gamaleldin also affirmed that this step reflects a growing commitment to enhancing the NCHR's institutional standing, reinforcing its independence, and enabling it to discharge its mandate and prerogatives with greater effectiveness — in conformity with the recommendations issued by the Sub-Committee on Accreditation of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
The meeting also featured substantive deliberations on a number of the proposed amendments, with consensus reached on several provisions. The National Council for Human Rights undertook to transmit its formal opinion on the draft law to the House of Representatives at the earliest opportunity, in fulfilment of its constitutional obligations, as a preliminary step towards finalizing the text of the draft law and submitting it for consideration by the plenary session of the House of Representatives.
