NCHR: Remembrance of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Is a Reminder That Freedom and Dignity Are Inherent Rights of Every Human Being

The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) commemorates, on 23 August, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, honoring the victims of one of the most egregious forms of violation of human dignity.

NCHR stresses that the abolition of slavery does not mean that the struggle has ended, particularly in light of the persistence of contemporary forms of exploitation, most notably human trafficking, forced labor, and the exploitation of children. These challenges require strengthened prevention and protection measures, as well as effective accountability.

NCHR reaffirms that freedom and human dignity are inherent rights of every human being, and that remembering the past should inspire continued efforts to build a present and a future free from all forms of enslavement and exploitation.
