Ambassador Moushira Khattab meets with Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament

Ambassador Moushira Khattab, President of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), today met with Chancellor Hanafy Ali El Gebali, Speaker of Egypt’s House of Representatives (“Parliament”). During the meeting, she extended her thanks to the Parliament for electing the new members of NCHR before being approved by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in an unprecedented step underpinning the democratic process in the country.

During the meeting which was also attended by NCHR member Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat, Khattab lauded the first session of the House of Representatives (which included electing the Speaker of the Parliament), noting that the session has set new traditions to be added to the historic heritage of the Egyptian Parliament, underscoring the prominent reputation of the Egyptian legislative process throughout history.

The NCHR President highlighted her keenness to strengthen cooperation with the House of Representatives, commending the role of the parliament in consolidating the foundations of democracy and supporting human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Khattab noted that the State’s launch of the national human rights strategy has raised the aspirations bar, confirming the commitment to strengthen human rights.

For his part, Chancellor Hanafy Ali El Gebali, Speaker of Egypt’s House of Representatives congratulated Ambassador Khattab for assuming her new role as President of NCHR, stressing his confidence in the new NCHR members and their ability to perform their national duties.

Furthermore, the Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament has stressed that the launch of the national human rights strategy by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi represents a concrete enforcement of the constitutional provisions in relation to human rights and freedoms.
